Something about Mingus and his trombonists. Granted Tizol deserved it, whereas Knepper was just unfortunate. Actually, knowing a little about Mingus, it's more accurate to say, something about Mingus and everybody. Still, extraordinary musician, and great concert.

Even more importantly, THEY could hear him. Just imagine if you took the bass out (apart from when Dolphy gets really into his solos, when it ceases to be ensemble work!)... But he's more than just the glue holding the group together, he totally drives the thing from the bass stool, and I don't for a minute think that he'd get the same effect just standing in front of them conducting. What else would you want from a bassist? Soloing? Well, just listen to some of his solos if you're not convinced
