arent the DDG-1000 destroyers being commissioned in like 2015? only 7 out of the 35 are planned. Thats pretty insane weaponing for a ship

world peace can only be achieved by removing human ambition from this world. which i dont think anyone would be happy about.

I read an article in Pop Science mag about a year ago. The Navy fired an .80 Calaber round (slighty bigger than a paintball in diameter) at a small building. The projectile reached about 7500 FPS (over 5000 miles per hour) and caused all the windows to explode out of the building, but in less than a millisecond the entire building colapsed caused from implosion. LOL the projectile had actually sucked the atmospheric pressure out of the building.Crazy stuff I must say.

eh inertia doesn't have anything to do, directly, with "explosion", explosion is "rapid expansion" that's all. What I assume is that the projectile vaporizes and expands at an immense speed on impact (kinetic energy turns to heat when it's slowed by the impact, it has to go somewhere) nifty stuff. They ought use the launch heat of the projectile in a turbine system to recoup some of the lost power by heating water and generating some electricity.

With enough kinetic energy, anything will explode on impact. It's called inertia. Kinetic weapons are the future. Fire a missile from space at a city, let it accelerate to Mach 30, watch it drop to the Earth (it will be moving fast). If it does not burn up during reentry, the city is toast. The principle is the same as an asteroid hit.

No, I'm not from the Army. But I'm also not so naive that I believe there will ever be something even remotely similar to world peace as long as humans walk the earth.

The Navy plans to have a class of destroyers armed with these to replace the battleships they have to call up from retirement.

Just as you won't stop and wait for them, which is why they're developing their systems. |
