I have had the privilege of hearing Derryck Diffey play MANY times. This solo is definitely his calling card solo. I heard him play it at Massey Hall in Toronto and right in the middle of a long sustained part thunder rocked the building. Derryck never wavered! Good job David but Derryck was magnificent all through his career.

I had the opportunity to play with Derryck for many years with the Agincourt Temple Band including a tour to England/Scotland in 1998 where he played this, his calling card solo. He would have been in his early 60s and played with so much more passion and feel than David (who is admittedly incredible; cf. Odyssey: Sounds of Singing). David is somewhat "cleaner" in his approach (yes, with the typically British cornet sound/vibrato), but there is something stale and mechanical about it.

I actually love brass bands having played in them for many years and have met David. He is a great technician but this constant uncontrolled vibrato sounds quite ridiculous.

Do you know who this is ?? Your obviously not into brass bands!!!

Strange approach to playing with a nervous budgie type sound, when he plays with a full straight sound it sounds great. Vibrato works when used intelligently, not every note.
