I love this song, much as I like nearly all of Chris Rea's songs. I'm not sure I would have given it the same lyrics, but the optimism, drive and incalescence of the melody has personally succeeded in alleviating depression in the past. I think on various levels the song is about the American Dream and capitalism as shown by the juxtaposition of the old banger with the BMW at the petrol forecourt. The outside shots at the start of the video and the car might as well be from East Germany.
