Peteherron, yes, the moon moves during the night, but that shouldn't be a problem. You said these were all still images, right? In that case, bring them all in to Photoshop, center the Moon in each frame (temporarily making the layers transparent to make sure you've got the Moon in the exact same spot in each frame). And THEN animate it.Yes, that's a lot of work, but it'll clean up the shaking.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think it's because the Earth's atmosphere acts like a big lens or prism. It's as if the Earth was a big black circle with a bit of glass around the rim. Sunlight that shines through that "rim" of atmosphere gets bent. So when the Moon is completely covered by the Earth's shadow, it's also at the focal point of that giant lens. So it gets lit up by the sunlight that's refracted through the Earth's atmosphere.At least, that's what I think happens.

I was actually in Disney World when this happened, the firework show Illuminations just ended, and there it was, damn that was so cool.
