One of the best ballads I have ever heard on trombone or in general. Shows that you dont have to playing fast to show your a master on your instrument. Love the multiphonics towards the end too.

Definately the sweetest sound of any trombonist I've ever heared, and I've heared any of them that have made the scene.

Swing had its heyday, but bebop was NEVER popular. It reached the point where people just couldn't understand it. They could appreciate the fast tempos, altered notes and scales, amazing technique, but that is not enought to keep jazz alive. It needs to be MELODIC. Bird could do both, as could some others, but how long can any art form survive if people don't understand it.I listen to some of the greats playing "outside" and I can't tell if they're playing in the same key as the rhythm section.

I tend to agree with you that Watrous is not as melodic in his playing now as when he was a relative youngster. A polite way of putting it is to say that his music has "evolved." Where once he was definiely bebop all the way, now he is more post-bob. But I would still put him up against any trombonist in the world as far as technique is concerned. I prefer his earlier work to what he's into now, so I can appreciate the point you are making...it's quite valid.

Actually I have heard him recently. But I was talking about not hearing this kind of musicality in his playing today. If you compare his playing now with his playing then, then you'll see what I'm talking about.

Oh, is it true? That is very tragic.I also heard that Amsterdam is famous.I wish to go there sometime of my life.

tHE FACT is jazz is a dying art form in the states. Tragic, but true. Jazz has a bigger audience in Europe, the Scandinavian countries, the Russian Federation, Japan, etc. That's where you'll find the American jazz musicians. If you want to hear jazz, go to Amsterdam; that's my favorite place to play.

You don't hear him anymore? Where have you been? He's considered one of the greatest, if not THE GREATEST
