Yup, thats why Chinese is only restricted to the written language (simplified and Traditional), while spoken language is called dialects of Chinese, including Mandarin, Cantonese, and other dialects in China that are also regional.

sorry for earlier misconceptions abt cantonese, chinese and mandarin ^^
freneticbottle (May 23, 2008 at 2:27 pm)
so right, is there a mandarin version of this song?
freneticbottle (May 23, 2008 at 2:24 pm)
in my message, chinese= mandarin.im not from china.from my country, we call mandarin chinese sometimes.

Very ignorant. This is not some strange dialect. This is a language that is spoken in China for many years before they chose mandarin as the official language. Plus, Chinese(中文) should encompass all chinese dialects just like 中國人 should encompass all Chinese whether they speak Mandarin or Cantonese or what not.

In fact, chinese[pronunciation] that we think doesn't exist anymore. Mandarin was a business language which used widely at the border of china. On the other hand, cantonese is come from southern china which keeps most of the original pronunciation....Or, if you look into the Japanese, some of their kanji's pronunciation is really close to cantonese. Anyway, the original chinese does NOT exist anymore. And, both mandarin and cantonese should consider as chinese
