You can easily visualise a centimeter if you've grown up using the metric system. I can't visualise an inch. Some times I can't even remember how long it is.

Rule of thumb simply comes from the fact that the end section of the thumb is about an inch long, so you can use the thumb as a ruler. Imperial measurements were practical, unlike the metric rubbish which replaces them - one can so visualise an inch, unlike a centimeter.
