I listened Giacomini live 4 times; two of them here in Padua in concert at the Verdi Theater. I too do keep a bright memory of the several great qualities of his singing, but inevitably the more vivid one is the incredible strength of his voice. The last note of "Cielo e mare", the si bemolle "Ah vien...!" was a crescendo of inexhaustible, unforgettable power. Grande maestro, quando mai riascolterò una voce come la tua.

People coming to Giacomini for the first time are usually so overwhelmed by the voice that they tend to overlook everything else that is there. A second or third listening will reveal that he was spectacular musician and stylist. The phrasing, diction, style and general musicianship are superb. He was a conservatory graduate, with honors, and was a highly disciplined musician from the very beginning. This puts him in a rather special category of tenor.

Yeap! Where is Milnes, he is taller, bigger, a baritone who goes pretty high, right? Powerful too, right, but, I can't really see him, although he sort of gets in the middle at the beginning!

He might have gone up, but hey!, I can only hear Giacomini!

keep in mind that domingo's manager, breslin LEFT HIM for pavarotti in the middle of domingo building a career. witht hat being said, ALL singers make their careers NOT managers. this is NOT pop music. wjen it comes down to it either you can do it, or you cant. giacomini, had a great career and NO ONE can deny that. he sang very often at the MET and to great success. i guess when it comes down to a TENOR voice. people want beauty and many didnt think g's singing was elegant enough. cheers!

Mr Giacomini, as they say "RESPECT!" I remember my mother talking about a fanciulla he did at covent garden. I remember the tone of her voice as she described him. It was one of awe. I can now see why. Has to be the best concert version of this duet i have ever heard! AMAZING!

Giocomini was a singer's singer. He was a technician and was all about the ART of singing...and not so much the POLITICS. His career was stunted because of this...but greatness can't be hidden, even with Politics working against a great singer who can't, or won't try to fight the machine. There are many clips on You Tube of Giacomini...and it doesn't take long to recognize that HE was the dramatic tenor of his time.

Giacomini is just so ridiculously good. It's just silly. It is often someone chews up Milnes and spits him out. That might be the real reason his career wasn't as big in the States. Who can really sing with this guy?

I can understand what 63Attila is saying about erratic technique. At certain moments, particularly in his high register, Giacomini at times overmodifies his vowels. He also sings a legato so perfect that his consonants are barely audible at many points. Not that I have perfect vocal technique myself...just something I picked up on. |
