Officially, Layne was 34-1-2 when he fought Marciano but he was definitely thought to be a top dog in the division at the time.

Marciano will always be criticized. He made all of his opponents look like tomato cans, so ignorant people are going to think they actually were tomato cans. Before fighting Marciano, Rex Layne had beaten every guy he fought, including Joe Walcott. After fighting Marciano, he went downhill, just like most of Rocky's opponents. That means nothing, Marciano disabled the guys he fought.

the one thing you have to give credit to rocky for ,he had brains,,retired undefeated with his senses intact,,look at cassius clay mumbling and stumbling,,gene tunney also knew when it was time to hang em up,,,why do fighters like clay, tyson, holmes, foreman holyfield ,etc just keep punching away, whats the point ,how much money do they need, hell tyson made 50 million in ring earnings

Fighters in them days had amazing conditioning. If fat bastards like Sam Peter/Toney/Tua actually trained hard and didnt eat all the pies, then they could be great. Marciano Would have been beat by Ali, Foreman and would be pick 'em against Tyson and Frazier. Most of the bums of the past ten years would have been marmelised by Marciano.

Jerry Quarry would have counter punched either one silly.

Marciano was great , but imagine one punch from Foreman on his 190 pound body . He would never get up . He could be killed against the 250 pound heavies today , but maybe he would have been a great cruiser or light heavyweight fighter !

REPLY TO ANTI-MARCIANO MISSION(weak opposition dept.)Against Rock, Layne (6'2" & 200lbs+) had won over 30 fights with 24 stoppages & 1 pts loss. He had outpointed Walcott & TKO'd hard-hitting Satterfield.Layne, who had been hailed as a new Dempsey, belonged in the pre-illegal dopants period of boxing & like the rest relied on his own balls & not substitute balls in the form of steroids & drugs.K. Terceira of East Side Boxing rightly refers to Layne as an "unsung hero of boxing."

Marciano KO'd 4 former world champions, the British & Empire heavyweight champion (who was until then undefeated as a heavy), took on all the top contenders & ducked no one. So quality opposition.Boxing was a serious game then & heavy champ meant sth. Rock wore the same belt as Louis, Dempsey & Johnson. Ali was able to partly redeem some of this thru showmanship, but the old fans turned their backs on boxing post Liston-Ali farce & post exponential rise of illegal dopants.

Any comment on how his opposition was better than LaStarza's and Marciano's?
