If this were the 60s the students would've acted once the police refused their badge numbers. I would like to point out that it is illegal to not give your badge number when you are asked and it is also illegal to threaten a concerned peaceful by-stander with a tazer gun just for asking for badge numbers. There were several police there. They could have just carried him out.

"What was their alternative?" Step 1, you and your five other officers split the combined weight of a scrawny college kid (~40lbs ea). Maybe 4 so one can draw his gun and point it at peoples heads, to make the other vaginas feel safe. Step 2, LIFT! Campus police officers should know how to deal with passive resistance without allowing a massive public relations fiasco for the university. It is an EXTREMELY common situation.
