Don McLean is one of the greatest singer/guitarists ever in my opinion. Others may not agree, but I've grown up with this song, I can play it on the guitar and I know all the words. It touches my heart every time I hear him sing it.... Go Don!

I love this song. None of my freinds do though....This song reminds me of my freind Andy because it's so sad. Andy died in a ski accident. =( I've probably already listened to this song five times today.

i thought it was a reference to america landing on the moon and breaking the barrier of space exploration in general. which happened in the 60s, generally as did the other events in the songs.
