hey Alex...if you get the chance, check out my response to Igor Savtchenkos comment on your rebuttal...peace...

To ad to my comment. Bartok's career was significantly charged by his study of North African music (among other ethnic forms). If you listen the second movement of his Solo Violin Sonata, you will clearly here dashes of the Maqamat's Saba mode and he has a version of piece which there are more usage of microtones as influences by North African music

hey Igor! I think a lot hostility that is engendered from black musicians comes from the assumption that black music is purely intuitive and not intellectually planned out. Then when a black musician (classical and jazz) makes a significant contribution to the world of music, the subtext is that it was influenced by a European composer. So I kind of feel were Alexander's hostility is coming from. Although, I am not justifying the racially charged comment.

Wow, your reply comment here is just amazing. You built a hilarious metaphor. Also, however, you must remember that Miles adored the piano playing of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, the composition of Igor Stravinsky, and arrangements of Gil Evans. All are white motherfuckers. Charles Mingus praised beyond belief the Bartok quartets performed my the Juilliard String Quartet. By the same token there have been amazing black performers of European classical music. Many.

There is no chord progression wanker. Its called free, ad libbed jazz. Do you have a progression when you eat with a knife and fork?? OF COURSE NOT ! IMPROVISATION ! dumb fuck. Miles said he could always tell when a black guy played. We can always tell when a stupid white fuck posts.
stuthehistoryguy (July 23, 2008 at 1:59 pm)
I can't pick out the chord progression in this piece; is he playing the Billie Holiday hit?Just picking nits, of course. This is brilliant.

For me, Eric Dolphy will always be the ghost in the machine... THE primordial voice that has influenced everything artistic before and since his untimely death. It's a shame not many people know his name or the profound effect he had on many a musician. A great man...he never knew how truly great he was.

I love Dolphy. This is awesome. |
