ok, Skids...i gotta enlighten u on his 'Syd' nickname. way early on when he was learning guitar, he used 2 go hang with some true older bluesmen and watch them play, learning riffs and tricks. There was one named Syd, and they called Barrett 'Little Syd' cuz he was always shadowing this veteran bluesman. He never liked the nickname, but it stuck all the same. LATER, people associated it with the acid--which was often slipped 2 him without his knowledge, besides what he took himself...

Syd was never contrived as Psychedelic (hate that word). Pretty sure he did not think he was either. Syd was free form. Anyone who witnessed Syd at UFO, Marquee, around this time (even if they were shot to bits) would tell you how different he was. Pete Townsend comes to mind. The meeting of Mike Leonard (experimenting with lights) is important and deserves more recognition and kudos. "Turn up, Shell out, Get lost" as the poster say's.

That's a laugh. The Beatles already were psychedelic: see Tomorrow Never Knows released approx 6 months earlier on Revolver.

Roger Keith Barrett[Syd...acid i think !],was a musical and lyrical genius. The overratted Stones and Beatles pale into the shadows in comparison.Check that spelling out dude!Cheers and no offence.

While The Beatles, Stones and others (usual suspects)were trying to be as psychedelic (man)and out there (yawn), Syd was writing songs that even today are timeless, esoteric and so different that he mnust of been so far ahead of that possee.

i completely agree man. he was really plumbing the depths of his apparent madness, and producing great songs along the way. I love both this stuff and the gilmour era stuff. its all fuckin great. (apart from the final cut, that dosent really stand up to the rest of their work eh). |
