I would recomend not to believe all that garbage the jazz books says about the "decline" in Bud's music: actually, i.e., his 1962's (live at the Essen Festival) version of "All The Things You Are" with Beans on tenor is simply fa-bu-lous, my favorite ever no doubt. Or give a listen to "Bouncin' with Bud" (Delmark), or the album with Art Blakey...Please!

There's another video on YouTube where you can hear Bud making this same Gremlin sound and you can see the relationship between the Gremlin sound and his mouth moving in that video, though the sound isn't nearly as prevalent in the other video. I have a friend who makes noises also and doesn't realize he's making them --- maybe it's a form of Tourette's, I don't know. He's still 1 of the 5 best jazz pianists of all time

bud used to keep this little gremlin thing shackled to his leg for good luck. don't try to understand it, it's a jazz thing.

Could any other musician even achieve what Bud did in 1949-50, let alone maintain that level for years, despite police beatings, stays at mental hospitals replete with electro-shock therapy, etc.? No. Any period of Bud has got wisdom and mastery, Thank you Bud. |
