So claims Wikipedia: "Caruso and Ruffo did pair up twice in the recording studio. Only one recording of these survive, the duet "Sì, pel ciel" from Otello. It is considered by many vocal connoisseurs to be the greatest single vocal record ever made. Among many other vocal feats in this recording, Ruffo, unlike any other Iago on records, manages an incredible, declamatory vocal style from beginning to end. Caruso rises to the challenge, and the result is unequalled by any other recorded tenor-baritone combination in recorded history."

you are so right. had caruso been able to sing this role with ruffo there would have been NO debates on who the best duo of otello-iago. tamagno/maurel, zenatello/tibett, viany/valdegno, delmonaco/protti or domingo/milnes just to name a few duo's couldn't hang witht htese two boys! damn!

I disagree. I think that during the duet, they fuel eachother more with each bar. They have excellent chemistry as well. If Caruso had lived to sing Otello with Ruffo at the Met, they would have....well, other than bringing the house down and getting a booming standing ovation as long as the opera itself, I'm not exactly sure what would happen. Mass mayhem could ensue! Who knows?

Caruso and Ruffo sang in Europe on several occassions. Possibly money was the issue at the MET / Thwy both got top fees. In Caruso's biography by his son, he claims that his father and Ruffo were friends and that Ruffo visited Caruso when Caruso was dying.Of course, the other story is better copy.s s

There are stories that Caruso was very jealous of Ruffo. He curtailed his career as much as he could...kept him out of the Metropolitan Opera until he was no longer a great baritone. Like some of the stars of today..he would not allow other great singers to have the spotlight. Ruffo was not his best by this time. He had sung himself out. Also, after hearing recordings of himself, his voice started to fail him. He tried to hear in his own head what he heard on recordings. This is vocal death.
