Broadcast November 25, 1981 -- Veteran dancer Gregory Hines (1946-2003) dances a duet with "beginner" Steve Martin (born 1945), who says he has just completed his "first MGM musical," "Pennies from Heaven." This was a bright spot in an era of few TV variety shows. Greg Hines was already beloved in the worldwide dance communities, and Martin was carving a niche for himself in traditional Terpsichore, which was insignificant to most entertainers in 1981. This was, after all, four years before the MGM film "That's Dancin'" validated the work of many old song and dance artists. The song "Fit As A Fiddle" was written in 1932 by Arthur Freed (lyrics) and Al Goodhart & Al Hoffman (music). This little bit of show biz gave Martin another well-deserved feather in his cap, one that set him apart from any other stand up or sketch comedian.

As good as Steve Martin is a tap you can't help but smile as you just see a comedian tap dancing he did a great job ,but that was a mere warm up for Mr Hines R.I.P .

That was fantastic. Gregory Hines was so graceful, and Steve Martin completely held his own with a dancer who was already a legend. Steve Martin really is a true renaissance man.

I was totally SHOCKED that you didn't know who Gregory Hines was - then I noted you're 18. So that makes sense. :DI first saw Gregory when I was 19. He did a legendary musical called "Eubie" about the life of Eubie Blake. It stared he and his brother. Gregory and his brother started tapping with their father when they were boys. The act was called, "Hines, Hines and Dad". Then just the Hines Brothers, then just Gregory. Also a fabulous actor. Many movies under his belt. Read about him. :>
