Well first off you don't castrate cows, you castrate bulls and then they become steers. Bulls are very agressive and constantly fight to hold or gain their position in the pecking order. This leads to a stressful life and a high chance of injury. The more bulls around the harder it is to keep them away from the cows. It actually doesnt hurt them much more then when you get a vaccination shot. There are better ways to castrate, faster easier and less blood.
