When the balrog fell into the lake it put out the flames on his body which weakened him severely. For seven days the balrog ran until both the balrog and gandalf reached the mountain's peak where the balrog's flame erupted again returning him to full power and enabling him to fight again.

Gandalf Chased him through the intire domain of Moria until they were on the surface of the mountain and they faught all the way to the peak of the mountain. You should read the books, they are pretty good.
