I agree. That was going to be my other point. He creates some of the best "composition solos". To do a solo without any cymbal crashes except a few at the end is so interesting to me. It would be easy to pull out some more sounds to make a solo more interesting or the typical double bass fluff but his drum duets are composed like a song and not with the "intention" being a "drum solo". If you have ever tried to play in time with another drummer it is usually not an easy thing to do.

You did not read what I wrote very well. I Actually did "recognize". Collins is not anywhere near as "technical" as Portnoy. I do not disagree. Technical is also not better. What I am saying is Portnoy does not not have the kind of sound that the icons do. When you hear Bonham, Peart or Collins play on the radio you know who it is. If I just listened to Portnoy on the radio I would say "great drummer" but I would not him by the sound of his playing. That is the difference. Double bass is fluff.

Get a clue! If you can't recognize Portnoy on the drums then you obviously haven't listened to Dream Theater that much. Phil Collins is a great drummer, but pales in comparison to the technical abilities of Portnoy. Listen to Dream Theater some more and tell me that Phil incorporates odd time signatures, polyrhythms and syncopations (to name a few) like Portnoy does. I think NOT!!

Ok, wow. Phil (and Chester) may not be the *best* strictly speaking (Steve Smith, Vinnie Coliutta and some others) but what he DOES do best is musical compositions with percussion. I love watching the interplay-even though left handed drummers are tough to watch, just don't get how they play backwards :) Each time I see these two guys its so cool to listen to the funk, the power etc. No one puts together a drum *song* like Phil.

As a percussionist, there's nothing I hate worse than lighting engineers flashing the lights during a drum solo and entirely destroying my ability to see what the featured percussionists are doing. Seems to happen every time I go to a concert.
