In 1982, Julie Moss became worldwide famous during the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon, in which she competed as part of her research for her exercise physiology thesis. At approximately two miles before the finish line, she came severely dehydrated. She staggered and crawled towards the end of the course, only to be passed moments before the finish line by Kathleen McCartney. Her struggle to finish the Ironman was broadcasted live around the world by ABC Sports, and provided inspiration to many.

Jim McKay of ABC Sports called it "heroic . . one of the greatest moments in the history oftelevised sport." Gilbert Lang, M.D., an orthopedicsurgeon at Roseville (California) Community Hospital and a longtime endurance runner, calls it "stupid—very nearly fatal."both were right

Her body went into complete muscle failure, which is normal after doing rigorous exercise for hours during the day. It does happen. It happened to me once (and it didn't feel good either).

I guess the politically safe, super sportsman-like thing to do would probably be to cross the finish line together with Julie Moss, but considering that she didn't even realize what had happened or that she had won, I really don't see what people can hold against her.

Easy to say in hindsight. Back then though, these people were going on there full of nothing but water and bananas; such extreme endurance races were still comparatively new and there was little medical experience to fall back on. Heck, the sponsor was Bud Light. Athletes today are much better prepared to take on the challenge and the vast majority still can't hack it at this level; imagine how absolutely badass those thirty years ago must have been.

a little nutrition out on the race course might have helped.

Why should she (Kathleen) had any fault at all?
