Absolutely correct, anything with a huge amount of power and space. That is until they make the next jump in power supply technology. These same guys are making a jeep sized railgun aswell that should be finished by 2010 that's accurate over 2+ miles from what I remember.

Amazing weapon, saw these guys on future-weapons awhile ago, this seems to be a better version though. The effectiveness of this comes down to recharge rate, and portability. I would love to see this used in space travel.

This is often the case. Mostly because the projectile will weld itself to the rails if it is fired while the projectile is static. The gas is used to accelerate the projectile to a velocity sufficient to keep it from welding itself to the rails.
