Jewish law (Halachah) defines a Jew as one who is born to a Jewish mother. If his mother is not Jewish, neither is he.

We did not misinterpret the Torah. We have not always lived up to it (and have suffered the consequences), but this is not the same as misinterpretation.G-d gave us the Torah so that we would live by it. It's not beyond us to do so. If that were the case, G-d would be cruel to hold us to something we couldn't live up to. But the truth is that there have been many, many Jews in each generation that did live up to it, carrying it on in an unbroken chain from the moment we stood at Sinai.
