PowerBooks 17# from a batch of machines with serial number starting W85 produced early 2005 show frequent display screen defects in the form of vertical lines and flickering, translucent zones. The defects start showing up after 12-18 months and the defects continue multiplying making the screen useless. Apple does not recognize the defects. A large number of defect cases are being accumulated in the database on http://www.crosspond.com/apple... "17inch "Bridget Riley" .

Just out a new inverter board in it, that would probably fix your problem.Apple is horrible about repairing your Mac and doesn't care how defected your computer is unless you pay for their overpriced Applecare Protection Plan.

Dear allAfter a number of discussions with Apple, Sweden and Ireland, I agreed to their proposal to pay for the repair material - a new screen. I should pay for the work myself.Getting my machine, I was not requested to pay anything. Apple had evidently taken on the full responsibility, as they are said to do in individual cases (of naughty customers).DELL has been much more straight admitting their screen failure and replacing it on a mass basis with no cost.Krister Pettersson

I have uploaded my video as well Applecare says they have never heard of this problem, but I have spoken with numerous people who have called them also. This should be classified as a manufacturer defect and recalled.

The Vertical Lines display defect is mainly a problem of a batch of machines with serial numbers starting with W85 made in an Apple Shanghai factory early 2005. DELL may have got their displays from the same factory for a number of models. However, contrary to Apple, DELL is taking their responsibility and will change the displays in machines less than three years of age. SHAME ON APPLE !!
