I'm amazed and pleased at how respectful the interviewer is in his questioning, considering the times.

Aw! Christine sounds like she was such a sweetie!
TheDragonGuy (April 14, 2008 at 12:36 pm)
well, even though plenty of people medically transitioned before her (FTMs back to the 1930's, MTFs a bit earlier I think), most people didn't know about it before her. a family member told the media when she had one of her surgeries in Europe, and from the time she hit US soil for about three years there was constant media sensationalism about her. a lot of individual people were curious about this, but just accepted her as a woman and that was that. others, opposite. some places banned her!

I was only nominally aware of the existence of this person, though I did not know her name. What was the public reaction toward her in the 1950s?

I've just finished listening to the full interview you linked to. I'm in awe. I'm amazed that a person with GID could have matured to such a well adjusted woman in the 40s and 50s. What a piece of work is she! And it appears her family were very accepting of her. This too is astonishing. I'm so glad i came across this video. Thaks so much, TheDragonGuy, for posting it.

she passed on in May of 1989, sick with cancer. may she rest in peace. she certainly was an inspiration, though

What an intelligent, confident, courageous and articulate woman! To think she didn't have any role model to look up to, and that she kept her head high in the face of ubiquitous adversity, and that she was willing to speak out and expose herself like that. She's my new hero! Is she still with us today? |
